STPM Biology - chapter 5 (old syllabus) chapter 5 (new syllabus): Revision essay question 3

3. Describe anaerobiosis in yeast and in animal muscle cell.

Answer

In the absence of oxygen, the cell carry out anaerobic respiration.Krebs cycle and the electron transport chain are not able to operate, only glycolysis occur and two ATP molecules are produced from each glucose molecule. In anaerobic respiration in yeast, pyruvate is decarboxylated to become etahnel.Ethanel is then reduced to ethanol by NADH.

In anaerobic respiration in muscle cells, pyruvate is reduced to lactate by NADH directly.
