STPM Biology - chapter 3: Revision essay question 8

Discuss the properties of enzymes.

Answer:

Enzymes are globular proteins. They lower the activation energy required for the reaction to take place. They act as biological catalysts and speed up the rate of metabolic reactions. Enzymes are highly specific. It possess active sites and will only catalyse a reaction when the substrate and active site have complementary shapes. Chemicals reactions catalysed by enzymes are usually reversible. Besides that, only a very little amount of enzymes is needed to react with a large number of substrate. The enzymes that catalyse reactions may be affected by the external factors, such as enzyme concentration, substrate concentration, pH,  temperature, presence of competitive and non-competitive inhibitors.
